Tea With Me: 18th August, 2023 Friday

Well, three weeks ago today I had a sore throat and noticed my patience was non existent. My stash of OTC Covid tests was way out of date so I tasked Husband with gathering 4 boxes of Quickvue from CVS. I tested negative late in the afternoon. When I got up the next morning, my sinuses were speaking to me. I tested while having tea and Voila!!! After three years of dodging and 5 vaccines, Lung Rabies had taken up residence. By midday on Saturday, I had to find the guest bedroom bed. I had called my Doctor who had called in a scrip for paxlovid for me just in case I felt I needed it. And I crashed. Aches, loose tummy, sore throat and sinuses cementing. Not fun.

The previous Wednesday, Husband and I had driven early in the morning to the Albuqurque Airport to recieve our newest canine child. Ocho, an 11 week old tri color Cavalier was flying in escorted by his Dear Breeder. I had waited in the very large atrium for 20 minutes with 2 trips to the ladies while rivers of travelers passed me either departing or arriving. Ocho and his Dear Breeder appeared at the top of the escalator and we waved and called to eachother. She immediately unzipped his carrier and handed me this squish of a plush licking wagging love missile who dammed the river of travelers who ooed and ahhed. She helped me with carrying Ocho and his supplies out to Husband waiting with the car to take us home and Ochito slept all the way back to his new home.

Now some of you know what the early moments of new puppy is like. Mayhem most likely even if the new iddy biddy is coming into a dogless home. We have 7 other canine children who needed to be introduced and reassured. Four are large sighthounds who although extremely gentle may have thier prey drive triggered by a small wiggling squeaky. Of course I had a plan about how to do this introduction but in the first five minutes all those plans went off with the fairies as the pack would not be held at bay. The other two Cavaliers had no issue. The about to be 14 year old Elder Statesman longhaired mini dachshund Angel of My Heart took one look and emmitted a psychic arrow at me, “How many times have I done this? I have raised all of the other six. I will let the Cavs do this one!!!”

My Saluki Prince and Wizard of Ahhhs who is always the love magnet for pups, took one sniff and dismissed the Squirm.

I let the Borzoi ladies out one at a time while Little Squirm was in an xpen so he could sniff and they could sniff but not eat him just in case the idea might occur. When we moved into this property three years ago we had many rabbits. We do not now.

So I had anticipated the harum scarum new pup period which I am well used to. The next day was his vet visit in the early afternoon. My vet office is small and privately owned and we know all the characters and they all know my fur kids. The excitement about a new Cavalier was pulsing in the practice as I walked in. He was zipped out of his carrier before I had taken two steps in the door and passed around. Ocho has an ever wagging tail. Impossible not to smile in his presence. He passed the vet and fecal check with 5 stars. And he also was passed around the Practice. I love hearing human beings squeal Cute Overload. So off home we go.

I felt tired. Not ususal at 2 in the afternoon. Figured the previous morning’s 4am wake up call for the airport trip was the deficit. The night passed with one puppy pee call at 3am and he went back to sleep til 6:30. Not bad for night 2. But my throat was sore.

Friday was just puppy up and down and potty trips and wow was he responsive and easy. He picked up the routine in a day.

So Saturday. Pup day four, I am crawling into bed with Covid. First time. He came right along. I moved into the guest room right off the kitchen with the potty yard door in between and for the next 10 days Ochito proved out to be an Ace. Loving cuddles, produced appropriate evacuations as the opportunities were offered, and played with the pack.

So Husband. Husband ran errands for the weekend and Monday. I did not feel I needed Paxlovid as my fever never got high. I had a chest infection which I needed antibiotic and cough medicine for but the teeth of the Lung Rabies residency was no worse than a medium flu for me.

Tuesday am Husband called me for the other side of the house saying he did not feel well. He tested, was positive, and was thinkin only about lying down. His fever was coming on. Watching my Viking start falling, his age being 69, I told him to call his Doc and tell him he had Covid and I had Paxlovid and ask if it would be ok if he took it. Doc said, “Go for it!!!”

So we discovered Fetch and Amazon delivery. All good.

So we are both through this tunnel.

The report is:

I am 64, have 5 vaccines for Covid. I did not take Paxlovid. I was sick and positive for 9 days. After the first two days I knew my lungs were full of crap so I took Zpak.

Husband is 69, has 5 vaccines for Covid. Did take Paxlovid. Slept alot for 5 days. Had some coughing and congestion. Didn’t need an antibiotic. Was postive for 5 days. Day aftter finishing Paxlovid, he was negative. He was negative for 4 days. On the 5th day he was positive again.

We isolated as I have been negative since the 10th day but he might have given it back to me. My immunity was loading but may not have been enough to fend off another knock.

He tested negative again two days later and has been negative ever since.

This is a new variant which is an Omicron child and has eels which slip past vaccine barriers. Its impact for the most part is much less of a whammy then it was but it still has teeth.

We had not had Covid and were thinking we would not get it. A few friends also have had this variant with our same profiles. This variant is visiting Santa Fe for sure. It is out there.

Pfizer is releasing a booster targeting this variant maybe September/ October.

Puppies are good medicine.

Stay healthy.

Tea was Black, creamed and Manukaed
